Lesson 43
5. PRACTICE PANELS
ALWAYS remember the following:
Polish the work surface before starting
Use the light to read the dent
Clock the dent, slowly working the sides of the dent towards the centre
Be patient, working slowly is often the fastest method
When working on highs, several small taps are better than one big one
Take extra care with the Cutter & Tapper tips – they can cause creases
You must achieve the Outcomes below to be assessed as competent in Exercise 4.

Use the body panel allocated to you to create some micro highs and lows. Now use the below instructions to practice removing these.
More about Dents
You are now able to fix some dents, as you practice you will gain some experience and be able to tackle more types of dents; however there will be some dents that you will never be able to repair perfectly.
Understand the characteristics of new dents before you tackle them….the depth and angle of the dent will affect the metals rigidity and how difficult it will be to repair. Remember the deeper and steeper a dent the more difficult it will be to fix.
Creases are the toughest type of dent to work on, as the metal has been stretched to a point and the sides are very steep. After some experience you will be able to minimize it’s look but don’t expect a perfect repair.
At first dents on BODY LINES should not be tackled, as the metal has hardened in these areas when the shape was pressed.

Use the wing or door allocated to you to make the allocated repairs.
REPAIRING WINGS AND DOORS
In many ways vertical panels are easier to work on but in general you have to look harder for your point of entry. The best way for WINGS is usually via a removed headlamp or indicator, through an open point in the door hinge panel. If you have to drill an access point, match it on the opposite side with a hole and grommet.
When working on DOORS entry from the top is often favored using a wedge to open the entry point. Make sure you protect the glass from being scratched. Check the door for plugs, lights, ventilation grills etc. you can remove and gain access. Removal of the door panel is time consuming and self defeating with the principal of PAINTLESS DENT REMOVAL.

Use the bonnet or bootlid allocated to you to make the allocated repairs.
REPAIRING BONNETS AND BOOT LIDS
Always check the accessibility before committing yourself to a repair, check that the dent is not near or over a badged area, double re-enforcement or where the rod tip cannot get near. Remove the insulation cover and check. If the damage is over or near a brace make sure you can free it using a brace cutting tool and use plenty of oil.
Boot lids can be more difficult as they have greater number of braces; also their curves are usually sharper.
Before you start on any customers cars it is important that you have a lot of practice, best for this are scrap bonnets.
Lightweight bonnets are easier to learn on, try and find ones with as few support braces as possible; this will give you more area to practice on.
Dark colours show the damage better and are good to learn with.
