Use your PDR light to see highs and lows on a vehicle
POSITIONING THE LIGHT
Check the reflection of the light on different panel positions, look for different types of damage and learn to recognize by the way the affect the reflection.
To fully appreciate what you are seeing check with the video as you do this exercise.
The movement of the light’s reflection will show you the exact location of the rod tip, beware of too much pressure, just move the metal….too great the pressure and you will create highs and/or creases.
In the space below, draw how the PDR light bends when it moves over a high

These exercises should be practiced before you can hit the centre every time first time. But learning to locate the tools tips is very necessary and will help to develop eye to hand co-ordination. You should not progress onto dents until you have perfected these exercises.
- CIRCLES OOOOOO
To develop good precision in locating the tool tip, locate the centre of each circle (watch the light pattern move) then use enough pressure to cause a micro high.
- X’s XXXXXX
Having developed good skill in locating the tool tip within the circle move to the X’s now; put a high exactly in the middle of each X.
- DOTS ……
Once you hit the X with regularity, move on to raising highs in the dots. Don’t get frustrated, be patient and keep practicing until you can hit the centers EVERY time.
Exercise 3: Assessment
Your Assessor will mark each effort with a ‘tick’ or ‘cross’. You need 6 ticks for each before you can progress further with PDR practicals. | ||||||
